Robert Indiana’s critique of consumerism was not performative in nature but deeply personal, and his domestic life reflected his penchant for solitude, enjoying his own company at home more than the socialite circuit. His happiness in isolation is beautifully presented in these intimate portraits by William John Kennedy. They give us a sense of the inner life of a talented young man who would become something of a recluse in later life, particularly after moving to Vinalhaven, Maine, in 1978.
